I mwbamastodonti (mwbqMastodontoidea mwbgOsborn, 1921) sono un mwbwtaxon oggi non più in uso, riferito a una superfamiglia di mwcaproboscidati.

In origine, in questo gruppo erano comprese le famiglie dei gomfoteri (mwcgGomphotheriidae), dei mammutidi (mwcwMammutidae, chiamati talvolta in italiano anche "veri mastodonti") e degli stegodonti (mwdaStegodontidae). La denominazione mwdqMastodontoidea per questo gruppo fu introdotta nel 1921 da mwdgHenry Fairfield Osborn (1857-1935).cite-ref-1[1]cite-ref-2[2] Essa risale al genere mwfwMastodon, creato nel 1817 da mwgaGeorges Cuvier (1769-1832) per diverse specie che, secondo l'attuale classificazione, non erano tra loro strettamente imparentate. Cuvier aveva riunito sotto il nome mwgqMastodon, tra gli altri, mwggMastodon giganteum e mwgwMastodon angustidens: il primo corrisponde all'odierno mastodonte americano (mwhamwhqMammut americanum), appartenente ai mammutidi; il secondo è oggi indicato come mwhgmwhwGomphotherium angustidens ed è assegnato ai gomfoteri. Va notato che Cuvier aveva già descritto entrambe le specie nel 1806, rispettivamente come mwiale grand mastodonte e mwiqmastodonte à dents étroites ("mastodonte a denti stretti").cite-ref-3[3]cite-ref-4[4]cite-ref-5[5] Il nome mastodonte deriva dal mwlggreco antico μαστός (mwlwmastos, "mammella") e ὀδόν (mwmaodon, "dente") e fa riferimento alla superficie dei molari, caratterizzata da rilievi a forma di tubercoli che, visti di lato, ricordano il profilo di un seno femminile ("denti a mammella").

Un tratto comune dei mastodonti era il loro aspetto già marcatamente simile a quello degli mwmgelefanti, sebbene presentassero un corpo complessivamente più allungato e basso e un cranio più lungo e piatto. Le forme più antiche erano relativamente piccole e piuttosto tozze. Inoltre, la struttura dentaria a cuspidi li distingueva nettamente dagli elefanti, i cui molari presentano invece lamelle orizzontali. Molti rappresentanti del gruppo possedevano, diversamente dagli elefanti odierni, zanne sviluppate sia nella mandibola sia nella mascella, derivate dagli mwmwincisivi.

Le analisi mwnqcladistiche hanno mostrato che i mastodonti non costituiscono un gruppo mwngmonofiletico (cioè con un'unica origine comune). Rappresentano piuttosto tre diverse linee evolutive, ognuna delle quali si è separata indipendentemente dalla mwnwlinea ancestrale degli elefanti (mwoaElephantidae). Per questo motivo oggi i mastodonti vengono ripartiti in tre diverse superfamiglie: i mammutidi sono assegnati alla superfamiglia Mammutoidea, i gomfoteri alla superfamiglia Gomphotherioidea e gli stegodonti alla superfamiglia Elephantoidea, che comprende anche gli elefanti attuali. Tutte e tre queste superfamiglie appartengono al gruppo degli mwoqElephantimorpha.cite-ref-6[6]cite-ref-7[7] Oggi il termine "mastodonte" viene usato colloquialmente quasi esclusivamente per il mastodonte americano, mentre la parola mwqgMastodon compare per lo più come parte di nomi scientifici di generi affini, come mwqwmwraNotiomastodon, mwrqmwrgStegomastodon o mwrwmwsaSinomastodon.cite-ref-8[8]cite-ref-9[9]
